Assessments

Self Assessment:
I think thats this topic is going okay so far, I have learnt some different types of animation and different ways animation can be used. I also think that my work for the Cornwall School Games was quite good and I enjoyed making it.

Peer Assessment:
Your blog is really smart and well played out. i think our final piece and cornwall school games poster were also very good. You always put lots of effort into your posts. - Lizzie.

Teacher Assessment:
You are progressing very well in this subject, your use of drawn and digital media is very strong and your ideas are always well thought out. Your analysis of existing animations and moving image is strong and will lead to strong influences for your final piece.

Well done - keep up the good work! A*

Animations Evaluation

Animations Evaluation

TV Shows and Movies
Animation is used in many films and programs, I think that most of these are have a target audience of younger children because of their storylines and the way the character looks and act. There are many different styles of animation within these two categories, there are some sic-fi and fantasy an I think this is another thing that makes these shows and films for younger children.
An example of a film that is animated is The Lion King, I think the target audience for this film is also younger children even though a lot of older people may like this as well because it may remind them of their childhood. I also think a lot of people like the message of the story which could be another reason why older people like it although I think that younger children are the main audience for this movie; The Lion King was a hand-drawn animation, I think this is a really good animation. The Lion King was directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff and  was produced by Don Hahn.
An example of a tv shows which is animated is The Simpsons, although this can be aimed at younger children there is also humour in there that normally children wouldn't understand so only adults pick up on it. A lot of different animations also do this so it can be aimed at a larger target audience.

Animation can also used in things like music videos, computer games, advertising and on the internet.
An example of an animation that is used in advertising is the way Kelloggs use animation. Kelloggs use animation in the way they advertising, they have used an animated character to advertise their brand. I think this is really effective because it has brought to live a character that could never really exist in reality and I think this is especially good to attract children to the brand. Advertising can also attract many different people
Animation may be used in music videos to a wider audience to the video and make the video more interesting and different to other things. Animation  could be used in computer games because computer games would be very different and a lot harder to make if actually people were used. Also animation means you don't have to something realistic and something that could me made in real life, with animation is can be anything. Animation is advertising is used to attract and wider range of people and make things happen that aren't really possible which intrigues people to the advert more. Animation is used in mobile phones when adverts come up and in games that can't be real and to make it more interest. On the internet animation is used to make thing more interesting which can make more people want to look at certain things.

There are also different types of animation, there is stop motion, 2d animation, 3d animation, flip book animation and hand-drawn animations, these are just some different types.

Animation within Advertising

Animation within Advertising

Reasons why animation is a powerful marketing tool
  • Practical – With no physical limits, animation can be used to show scenes that a camera cannot shoot.
  • Cost Effective – Animating a car crash is a lot cheaper than physically wrecking two vehicles.
Animation has dramatically moved forward, Warner Bro’s, Walt Disney and Pixar, and others, have made a massive impact in changing the way animation works, they have changed the way people view animation and they way that is it used. Brands such as “Murray Mints” and “Kelloggs” were quick to realise the potential of animation – Kellogg’s saw a great opportunity to bring life to the hand-drawn character’s already used on their cereal boxes.
In 2007, Bupa produced a series of animated TV adverts creating typical scenarios that people may face regarding their health and wellbeing. The main style of the animation was not too different to the “Mr Men” cartoons. This approach created a warm and gentle tone, ultimately leading to an over 25% increase in enquiries year on year.

Reasons why animation is used in advertising:

  • Quick Visual Summery
  • Easily grabs attention
  • Shows things that cannot be photographed
  • Show things that haven't been built yet
  • Position a company as technologically sophisticated

Kelloggs use animation in the way they advertising, they have used an animated character to advertise their brand. I think this is really effective because it has brought to live a character that could never really exist in reality and I think this is especially good to attract children to the brand. Advertising can also attract many different people

This is an another really successful company who used animation in the their advertising. This advert was one of the most successful animation adverts as it attracted everyone at any age. This attracted children as the advert is very cute, teenagers may also find it very sweet, adults could find it quite emotional and it could remind older people of when they were younger. Another thing John Lewis did to make this advert so successful is have animation that is similar to the film Watershed Down, this could have also helped to attract attention to the advert because people remember that film. This advert is that bright or in your face yet it still attracts you to it. Also this advert has a very good storyline although it is quite short there is a full story which people could relate to. Within this advert they used a very good and catchy song to attract people to the advert as well.

This is another successful use of animation within tv advertising. Sky used minions to advert their brand and minions are quite popular already so using them to advert is very clever because it will make people, especially children, want to buy the brand just because they already love minions. Using things that people already know and love to advertise is a very good way to attract people to a brand.

Cornwall School Games

I first made an edit for a poster design for the Cornwall School Games, I used the different colours to represent the different meanings. I then used this to make my first logo, which was then changed to create the final logo idea. I the put this logo onto different sports products, I think my hoodie was best because I feel like this would be main thing people would buy.

To change the colours of the people I used the magic wand tool to elect the areas of the picture that I wanted and then used the colour tool to select the colour I wanted. Then I rearranged all of the people on both the logo and poster to the way I wanted them. For the the poster I the used to text tool to type in the first part of the text and make it the size and font that I wanted. Then to make the word illusion stand out. I found a picture of an illusion on the internet and then made the writing out of it and placed the word where I wanted.

Animation Timeline

Animation is the technique of photographing successive drawings or positions of puppets or models to create an illusion of movement when the film is shown as a sequence.

"a combination of live action with 3-D animation"

Monoprint Edit

I made this by taking a picture of one of my mono prints and putting this into photoshop. I then used the quick selection tool to select the outside, I then chose a colour and used the fill tool to fill it in. Then for the middle banner I did the same think with the quick selection tool and filled in it making sure the cover the writing as well. Then I added the text making it the right size and font that I wanted. Then I had to find an image of a star and dragged this onto my text and made it the right size. Then for the rest of the image I used the paint brush tool to go over all of the drawing I had done before.

Tea Monoprinting

Tea Printing
In this lesson we did some printing to make images about tea, we did this by rolling ink out onto a page making sure there was the right amount of ink. Then we got an a piece a paper and put the paper onto the ink and put an image upside down and copied over the image with paper. Then we took the paper off and the image was printed on the paper.

Tea Research

Tea
Tea is a hot drink made by i
putting the dried crushed leaves of the tea plant in boiling water.
Tea comes from an evergreen shrub or small tree which produces tea leaves, native to southern and eastern Asia and grown as a major cash crop. Tea leaves use to be put into hot water and then mixed to make the drink, then the leaves would be taken out. Now the tea levels are ground up very small and make not tea bags. It is thought that tea came from China. You can get many different flavours of tea and there are many different companies which sell tea. Most people drink tea during the morning to help wake them up or just throughout they day. tea began as a median and then became a beverage.

There is a Japanese religion called teaism, it is a cult founded on the adoration of the beautiful.

Tea culture is defined by the way tea is made and consumed, by the way the people interact with tea, and by the aesthetics surrounding tea drinking, it includes aspects of tea production, tea brewing, tea arts and ceremony, society, history, health, ethics, education, and communication and media issues.
Chinese tea culture refers to the methods of preparation of tea, the equipment used to make tea and the occasions in which tea is consumed in China. he Korean tea ceremony  or darye is a traditional form of tea ceremony practiced in Korea, the chief element of the Korean tea ceremony is the ease and naturalness of enjoying tea within an easy formal setting.
Morocco is considered the first importer of green tea worldwide, Morocco consumes green tea with mint rather than black tea. It has become part of the culture and is used widely at almost every meal.
In the United States , tea can typically be served at all meals as an alternative to coffee, when served hot, or soda, when served iced, iced tea has become an iconic symbol.

Final Piece Evaluation

Final Piece Evaluation

My cause for concern is Surfers Against Sewage, I chose this campaign because this is something that effects me and a lot of other surfers and I also think is is something that needs to change. Also this sort of thing can effect a lot of people and could cause harm to people so I think more people should know about this issue and help to get ride of some of the sewage in the water. Surfers Against Sewage is a campaign to try and reduce sewage in the sea. My final piece will be displayed as a poster which is how the public would see my campaign, I think my piece would exist and be displayed near the beach so it would catch people's attention when they are at the places that it effects. Another good place I could display my poster would be in surf shops because it will effect a lot of people that go in that sort of shop so it would help to bring attention to this issue. My piece is a mainly a visual piece for people to look at. I would need to display it in places where my target audience would see it, my target audience is surfers.I used the Surfers Against Sewage campaign to inspire and create my design. I used different design strategies with in my final piece, one of the main ones I used was using a black outline to make the writing stand out and make it more bold and stand out. This way it brings more attention to the text in the picture and that means more attention to the issue the poster is raising. Another strategy I used within the text was using rubbish to make the writing more interesting and to do with the subject of sewage.  I also used the Surfers Against Sewage logo on my poster so people know that it is part of a real campaign and I used the sea as a background for the main image so it's related to the water. I also used a surfboard as the main image because then as soon as people see it they know it's about surfing.
If I could change my final piece I think I would try to make the image look more life like and realistic with the surfboard on the water, I would do this by either taking my own picture of a surfboard on water or finding an image on the Internet of it. I think this would improve my design. Another thing I would try to do would be to make the text easier to read my making it bolder and stand out more, I think this would bring more attention to what the campaign is actually about. I could do this by adding a thicker colour outline around the text. The main colour of the piece is blue as its the colour of the water and the colour of the Surfers Against Sewage logo, I'm also going to display the poster on a blue and water background.
Sometimes that I think work well about my piece is the way that the text is made out of rubbish although the its isn't that easy to read but I like the way it linked with the issue of sewage and it's a more interesting way to write text. Also I like the way that the text is curved Around the surfboard instead of being written straight.
One of the main things I changed about my final piece was having the surfboard over the water, at first I was just going to have the writing made out of rubbish but I added the surfboard to make the image more interesting. I combined the two ideas of the surfboard being made of rubbish and have the writing made of rubbish, I put these together and just had a normal surfboard with the writing made out of litter. I also added the logo to my design so people know that it is part of a campaign.

I used photo shop to edit and create my final piece, first of all I got the picture I need, these pictures were a photo of the sea, a surfboard, the surfers against sewage logo and an image of a rubbish tip. Then I put all of the photos into photo shop and used the sea image as a background. I used the quite selection tool to select the logo and then dragged that onto my background, I did the same for the surfboard. Then to make the text I first create a new layer on top of the image of the rubbish and I turned that layer white. Next I duplicated the rubbish image and dragged that on top of the blank layer. Then on the background copy layer I wrote out the text I wanted, chose the font and made it curved. Once I'd got the way the text was written write I had to dragged the blank layer so it was above the background copy. I then created a clipping mask and flattened the image. I then used the magic wand tool to select the text and I then added a black outline to the writing to make it stand out more and make it easier to read. Once I had made an outline for the text I dragged the text onto my background. Then I had to change the way the surfboard lay so it was horizontal instead of vertical because you couldn't read the writing when it was vertical. So I changed the way the surfboard was and made the text curved around it.
At first I was going to present my final piece in a a frame and have surfboard sticking out all around my piece. To do this I was going to print out pictures of different surfboard and stick them all around the edge of a piece of card that I would then stick my final piece onto. However I changed my mind about this idea and instead I have got a pain piece of paper and then splattered different colour blue paint over it. I will then stick my final piece to it so it is displayed with a paint splattered boarder.

This is my final piece.

Final Piece

I used photoshop to edit my final piece, I first got a picture of the sea and collected the images of rubbish, the surfboard and the surfers against sewage logo. To edit both the surfboard and the logo I used the quick selection tool to select the parts I needed. To make the writing out of rubbish I had to first creat another layer and turn it white. Then I had to duplicate the background and make it the top layer. Then I wrote the text I needed and made it the right size and font. I then had to graded the white layer over the background copy and creat a clip mask. Then I selected the parts I need and flatten the image then put it on to my final piece making it the right size and in the right place.

Final Ideas

To develop this design I could make the wave line up more so they look like the same wave and also make the back and white wave look like it had actual rubbish in it instead of he rubbish going over the wave.
I could develop this idea by putting the 'surfers against sewage' logo to show that it is part of a campaign instead of just poster. I could add the logo to my other design as well.
Another way to improve this design would be to make a background to make the design more interesting and I could make the rubbish in the surf board look more real and so you can easily tell that its rubbish.
To improve this I would also add the logo and try to make the writing look a little bit clearer.

Target for next lesson:
Next lesson I want to finish my final piece on photoshop and maybe develop it more to make it better.

Final Piece Research

Final Piece Ideas
Surfers against sewage

  • Half of a picture in black and white with no people surfing and then the other side bright and happy with a lot of people surfing showing the difference in having a clean ocean and not.
  • Using a surf board as a grave stone to show what an impact sewage can have. There would be a spilt down the middle so then the other side would either have a surf board lying there or someone running the sea carry their board.
  • Surfboard made up of all of the rubbish that can pollute the sea.
  • A beach or the sea full of rubbish with only a tiny space thats clean that can only just fit one person.

Online Bullying/ Faking Identity

  • A young person on one side of the screen so you can see there Facebook profile and with a spilt down the middle having someone who is on the same profile but is a completely different person. This would show that people aren't always who they say they are.

Andy Worhol Remake

I  made my own version if Andy Worhol's work.

I think my work is similar in that I have used different and bright colours for different parts of the image. Also I have different versions of my image that uses different colours.

To improve my image and make it more like Andy Worhol I could try and get rid of all of the white areas on my image and I think it looks a little bit to realistic. Also Andy Worhol has changed the colour of people hair in many of his images so I could so this as well.
